An international field, a perfect evening and a forgiving 30-foot drop down Yakima Avenue made for a thrilling and record-setting debut Saturday at the Downtown Yakima Mile.

Six runners broke four minutes in the men’s elite race and at the front was Germany’s Amos Bartelsmeyer, who clocked the fastest mile ever in the state of Washington at 3 minutes, 51.79 seconds.

Tripp Hurt, a 26-year-old from Boulder, Colo., led three close pursuers to the finish line in downtown in 3:53. Kenyan Edwin Ngetich and Daniel Herrera both clocked 3:54.

Herrera was the 2018 champion of the Bring Back The Mile Grand Prix tour and Saturday’s race was the second stop on the 2019 tour.

Bartelsmeyer’s victory and record earned him $10,000 of the $30,000-plus prize money that was handed out. Hurt’s runner-up finish earned him $3,000.

Therese Haiss took home $5,000 for winning the women’s elite mile, clocking 4:29 to edge Heather Kampf by a second. Haiss missed out on the $5,000 state-record bonus by less than two seconds.

Hurt and Kampf lead the points standings for the Grand Prix tour with the next event scheduled in Pittsburgh on Aug. 9.

Eisenhower junior Jonas Price won the high school race by 33 seconds with a time of 4:17. He is preparing for a two-mile track race at the Brooks PR Invitational in Seattle next Saturday.

Rosalie Fish, a senior from Muckleshoot Tribal recently featured in the Herald-Republic for her efforts in bringing awareness to missing and murdered indigenous women, was the top high school female finisher in 5:19.
